FRIENDS OF PAWS IN PRISON (BLACK TEAM)

In December 2007, an amazing program, Paws in Prison (PIP), was established by Machellle Gaconnet in the Lockhart Correctional Facility in Lockhart, Texas. This program pairs rescue dogs from rural kill shelters with female inmates who learn to care for and train the dogs who are then adopted by the general public. Since then over 400 dogs have been placed into forever homes and many of the inmates go into animal-related occupations after their release.  Sadly Machelle, who the inmates lovingly called Ms. G, passed away in September 2019, but her mission to rescue dogs and the women who train them lives on.

This amazing program works with a 4-way mission to:

  • Rehabilitate female prisoners
  • Save shelter dogs from euthanasia
  • Train a loving family pet for adoption
  • Provide communities with productive members who often bring their newly learned skills into animal welfare occupations

Many of these women have experienced trauma from physical and/or sexual abuse.  Most are mothers. Throughout the training, inmates are given guidance and encouragement. In the training process, as their testimonials state, these women learn valuable life skills such as patience, responsibility, accountability, and empathy.

Serving Lockhart, Seguin, San Antonio, Austin and all Texas communities, Friends of Paws in Prison is the 501(c)3 nonprofit set up to financially support the Paws in Prison program.  The program does not receive any funds from your tax dollars, and in fact saves tax dollars, because the ex-offenders who participated in Paws in Prison rarely return back to prison. Funding relies totally on grants and charitable contributions that pay for vet bills, program expenses, and pet supplies.

PAWS SHELTER OF CENTRAL TEXAS (RED TEAM)

PAWS embraces the animals we care for today and plans for those we will care for in the future. PAWS Shelter of Central Texas (PAWS) was founded in Kyle, Texas in 1986 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization providing care and love to homeless, abandoned, and abused animals in Central Texas. We are a no-kill shelter that believes in second chances! At PAWS, companion animals are given medical attention, care, and love for however long it takes for us to find them a loving home.

PFLUGERVILLE PETS ALIVE (GREEN TEAM)

Pflugerville Pets Alive is a federally recognized non-profit volunteer run, foster based, fear free animal welfare organization.  We are a community focused group dedicated to helping pets with or without people in and around our community.

We work to help dogs and cats around our community – preventing unwanted litters, keeping pets with a home out of the shelter system, and helping pets in the shelter system get into a home (foster or permanent).  We provide medical and behavior care as needed for our fosters.

We look for committed volunteers, fosters, sponsors, and board members to help drive our mission as we work to put ourselves out of business (wouldn’t it be nice to not have so many pets in need?)!

S.A.F.E. REFUGE OF CENTRAL TEXAS (GRAY TEAM)

SAFElogo

Our organization S.A.F.E. stands for Saving Animals From Euthanasia. We provide a voice for the voiceless.

S.A.F.E Refuge is an 100%  foster based animal rescue out of Austin Texas. Our mission is to work with the kill shelters outside the Austin area and save animals from Euthanasia. As Austin is No-kill, we feel we can make the greatest impact by reaching out to the surrounding small rural communities . We work with these Shelters to find loving and lasting forever homes for these animals. In addition, we help put together Spay & Neuter clinics and coordinate animal transports.

S.A.F.E works with an amazing network of trainers, Vets and Vet techs that help with medical cases and behavioral issues. Our goal is get these sweet animals back to great mental and physical health!

Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized.

SAVE AN ANGEL (BLUE TEAM)

Save-An-Angel is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization on a mission to build a community of compassion and care towards all animals by empowering people with the programs and resources needed to be responsible pet parents.
Founded in October 2009 by the parents of an American Dingo named Angel, the organization began as a successful fundraising campaign to provide an expensive, life-saving bone marrow transplant for Angel, who was diagnosed with Canine Lymphoma. Save-An-Angel has since expanded its original mission and now operates lifesaving adoption, transport, and spay & neuter programs in Texas. With a nod to its beginnings, the organization also provides educational resources for canine cancer prevention and treatment

TAKE ME HOME TRANSPORT (TEAL TEAM)

Our mission is to eliminate euthanasia by raising funds to transport animals from over-crowded shelters to no-kill shelters that have adoption wait lists.
Many animal shelters in Texas and other southern states are overcrowded and euthanize healthy animals based simply on lack of space. In contrast, some animal shelters in northern states have the opposite problem – more people who want to adopt than dogs to adopt. Transporting is a viable and simple solution to this problem.
After transport, dogs previously languishing in Central Texas shelters are then adopted within 3-4 days on average.

THUNDERING PAWS (PURPLE TEAM)

Thundering Paws’s mission is to rescue cats who are homeless, neglected, injured, or abused, vet them, get them adopted when possible, and provide a forever, cage-free home to those who haven’t been chosen yet. We’ll happily help dogs, too, when the dog has a foster.
We have a dynamic foster program. We rescue from our county shelter, San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, which is trying to become no-kill by 2020. We are involved in the group facilitating this no-kill effort at the shelter and in the community. We have a fledgling trap, neuter, return program in the Dripping Springs area which we hope to expand this year. We plan a barn cat program: we’re just lacking the personnel. We help pet parents needing financial assistance when we can. We give children seven and up, and adults volunteer opportunities. We manage at least two adoption events a week, and two adoption centers, one at a Petsmart and one at a Tomlinson’s Feed store.
We answer the phone! We answer emails! We work with the public to help as many animals as we can because we know we cannot do this alone. We are happy to give advice, assistance, and mentoring to anyone involved in rescue from the ground up.
Our staff and board members seek continuing education through American Pets Alive, Maddie’s Fund, and Best Friends opportunities, the better to serve our furry charges. We have developed a working relationship with many other rescue groups and shelters. We’re aware that we all must teach and learn from each other for the good of the animals.
