HUMANE SOCIETY OF GREATER KANSAS CITY (ORANGE TEAM)

The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City (HSGKC) celebrates over 100 years of faithful service to the lost, abandoned, and broken pets of the Greater Kansas City Area. Our mission is to save and improve the lives of dogs and cats throughout the Greater Kansas City community by providing preventative veterinary care, spay/neuter services, education, and adoptions.  Our Affordable Care Clinic is the only veterinary clinic operated by an animal welfare organization in Kansas City that is open to the public. We provide essential, affordable, veterinary services to our underserved community–helping families to keep their beloved pets in their homes.

The recent addition of our Ray of Hope Outreach Program has already made a huge impact on our community, providing a lifeline to those who need it most. While our outreach efforts only began in earnest in August, the program has absolutely taken off! In the last 6 months, we have provided over 43,000 lbs of dog and cat food to local families. We have also provided dog houses, straw bales for warmth, coats/sweaters for outdoor pets, humane tie outs, food/water bowls, and flea/tick preventative medications—all free of charge.

MIDWEST ANIMAL RESQ (LIGHT BLUE TEAM)

Midwest Animal ResQ (MARQ) was founded in 2009 as a small foster-based rescue group focused on rescuing dogs from inhumane conditions at local large scale breeding facilities.  With the help of dedicated supporters and volunteers, MARQ has grown into a multifaceted group in a short period of time.  While we are still very passionate about retired breeding dogs, our scope has increased along with our capacity to serve the animals of the greater Kansas City area.  Our adoption center in Raytown, MO opened in 2015, and our sanctuary property on 6 acres provides safe housing for animals needing special medical or behavioral help prior to going to their forever homes.  MARQ’s fantastic network of fosters open their hearts and homes to animals in need until a forever home can be found.  Our partnership with the city of Raytown means we take in all of the stray animals found but not reclaimed, making Raytown a no-kill city.

We are passionate about pets of course, but are also passionate about people and making sure their experience with us is just as wonderful as the new family member they are adopting.  Our mission statement is “Completing families one tail at a time” and, our focus is taking the time to get to know our pets and our customers so we can make a perfect match!  All of our adult animals go on a 2 week trial adoption to make sure everyone is happy in the new home, and our commitment to each animal is lifelong.

PRAIRIE PAWS ANIMAL SHELTER (PURPLE TEAM)

Prairie Paws Animal Shelter’s Mission Statement is to provide compassionate care and placement for animals in need.

Prairie Paws Animal Shelter is a private, no kill, 501 (c)(3), non-profit shelter, founded over 70 years ago by Beatrice Martin Peck. Through the tireless efforts of our staff and volunteers Prairie Paws Animal Shelter is dedicated to carrying out the following actions:

  • Give aid and comfort to the homeless shelter animals
  • Educate the community in responsible pet ownership
  • Help reunite pets with owners by offering low cost microchipping
  • Provide pet adoptions
  • Create a safer community

Our Founder Beatrice Martin Peck began advocating for the welfare of Franklin County’s homeless animals in the early 1940’s and continued to do so until her death in 1967. She founded the Franklin County Humane Society in 1946 and, through her own expense and effort, founded what was known as the Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter on the 25 of March 1947. The building was completed in 1948. Beatrice and her group of faithful supporters investigated reports of cruelty towards animals in the community, housed and cared for animals needing assistance, and established an adoption program for the community-all the while creating a living legacy that remains today. Prior to her efforts, the stray or otherwise unwanted animals were used for medical testing and had no voice. Beatrice’s efforts led to the enactment of many ordinances and regulations regarding animal care that remain today.

The Prairie Paws Animal Shelter is still a private, non-profit shelter operating by the same philosophy under which it was established over 50 years ago through the tireless efforts of its staff and volunteers. Prairie Paws Animal Shelter will never euthanize for space and all animals are given a second chance at finding their perfect families. A new facility was built in 2010 at 3173 HWY K 68, Ottawa, KS 66067. The old facility stood at 230 W 19th St. Ottawa, KS 66067.

RESCUE K-911 (GREEN TEAM)

Rescue K-911, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is a
foster-based animal rescue group operating in Kansas and
serving the entire Midwest. Since our founding in 2014,
our focus has been rescuing animals that have been left
with no other options in life. These animals have found
themselves in inhumane conditions, on euthanasia lists,
sick, abused, neglected or surrendered by their families
and simply not wanted any longer. We keep these
animals out of cages and with the help of dedicated
fosters, who have opened their hearts and homes to these
animals in need, Rescue K-911 has been able to save, care
for, and rehome thousands of animals.

SHEP'S PLACE SENIOR DOG SANCTUARY (GRAY TEAM)

Shep’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary is a refuge for abandoned old dogs in the Kansas City area.  It is named after Shep, a 10 year old rescue beagle, whose gentle spirit and utter good-dogness convinced his owners to start a place to help others like him.

We focus on the care of senior dogs, who have already spent time in a shelter or rescue, waiting to find a family.  We hope to find our dogs new families, but that is often difficult for seniors, so if we can’t, we will be their permanent, loving home.

The dog’s quality of life is our highest goal at Shep’s Place, with ample play time, freedom of movement, and caring, human interaction.  We believe our silver-muzzled friends deserve to enjoy their lives and be themselves for as long as they are able. The goal is to provide a home for the dogs, to get them out of their kennels, and let them wander the house, play in the yard, or sleep, as they choose.

UNLEASHED PET RESCUE & ADOPTION (NAVY TEAM)

Unleashed Pet Rescue is a licensed, non-profit animal shelter founded in 2011 by Danielle Reno.  Unleashed works to save the lives of homeless pets and strives to improve the image of bully breeds in our society.

We work daily with local high kill shelters throughout the area to pull “unwanted” pets to safety. We rescue animals from awful situations and bring them into safety. We recently have started doing outreach in the greater KCK area, to provide food and warmth to animals in need. We work to find homes for pets of all ages, health, temperaments, and history. Each adoptable pet is given the opportunity to thrive.

We are proud to say that we have created an organization that is no-kill and we will not euthanize any animal due to overcrowding. As with most other shelters throughout the nation, there is never enough space to fill the need. Because of this we partner with foster homes throughout Kansas City that help us provide a safe, comfortable situation for our pets until they can find their forever homes.

Unleashed Pet Rescue has been able to thrive because of our incredibly compassionate staff, as well as from the support of donations and marvelous volunteers. When a pet comes into our care, we know that they will be shown love and attention while they wait for their forever family.

Thousands of animals come through our doors each year. We receive no state or federal funding, meaning we rely entirely upon donations to cover our daily operating expenses. Every day our team works hard to providing a safe environment for animals throughout Kansas City.
